While Devin believes that quality employees are necessary, he feels strongly that those same employees must have a purpose for being in the company.

“Don’t try to find talented people that don’t have a specific role in your organization because you will never “make it work.” Define the role clearly, and then find the talented person. One of the biggest mistakes I have made is finding incredibly talented people that served no purpose within our organization at the current time, and I wanted them because they looked good on the roster and sounded like a great idea. While in reality, they didn’t serve a specific function in our company. Now, we do the opposite. We get granular on the function of the business that we need to fill, and then we find the talent for that role.”
Devin speaks to the fact that if someone has great prior accolades and has clear talent, it does not necessarily mean that they are a good fit for your business. In order to contribute effectively to a company, one must have an active, definable role, as well as a specific purpose in order to add value to the business.
